The 2017 Jordan Peele movie Get Out took the movie world by storm at its release. Daniel Kaluuya stars as the male Chris Washington, an African-American photographer.

Opposite him is Allison Williams, playing the role of his girlfriend Rose Armitage. The plot is centered around these two and most of the film is shot in Upstate New York where Chris goes to meet the Armitage family, and that’s when everything comes crashing down.

Chris, upon entering the Armitage house is discomforted by some of the strange acts of the members but tries to avoid it. Various eccentric events and interactions lead Chris to believe in something wrong going inside the household. As the events move forward, both Chris and the audience are welcomed to the reveal that changes everything upside down.
Get Out was a huge commercial and critical success. Jordan Peele became the first black writer-director to have a debut movie that crossed $100 million marks.

The film also holds an impressive 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Get Out received the Best Film Award at 90th Academy awards and would later go on to be listed among various top 10 movies of the 2010s.

As the name suggests, male lead Will (Logan Marshall-Green) and his wife Kira (Emayatzy Corinealdi) receive an invitation from Will’s ex-wife Eden (Tammy Blanchard) and her new husband David (Michiel Huisman). Along with them, a few other mutual friends are invited as well.

Upon visiting the house, everyone starts playing games, involving some intimate as well as disturbing moments.
One of their friends, Pruitt, confesses on accidentally killing his wife and going to prison for it, thereby, creating an uncomfortable atmosphere.

Uneasiness environment increases when Eden and David show a video to everyone in which Dr. Joseph is comforting a dying woman about embracing the sweet death. The story goes on, with things getting more and more horrific.

With Will being assured that things are very wrong in the house, he decides to leave, which not only comes back to bite him, but also leads to brutality and deaths.

The Invitation is directed by Karyn Kusama which premiered in 2013 at the SXSW film festival. Rotten Tomatoes has an 88% approval rating with the average rating standing at 7.57/10.

The movie is said to be Karyn’s strongest works which would not leave people’s minds for days, thanks to its incredibly unsettling but unpredictable story.

If you’re a movie buff, you would have listened about The Purge, or at least its concept. The Purge actually refers to an annual national holiday wherein all the crimes are legal for a 12-hour period.

Families can lock themselves in and the murderers can go on a killing spree if they intend to, and there would be no punishments. This festival is said to benefit the people as it lets them release the frustration and get back on with their lives.

Director James DeMonaco has directed The Purge (2013) and its various sequels, but like every other franchise, its first film stands out from the rest.

The movie is set in the future, the year 2022, when the United States is crime-free and the unemployment rate is at 1%, all due to The Purge. James Sandin, played by Ethan Hawke, works in a company that manufactures security systems, which he uses to his benefit and locks the house to defend from The Purgers.

James’ daughter Zoey (Adelaide Kane) has a boyfriend who sneaks into her bedroom before the house is locked, and intends to confront James about their relation.

The plot thickens when James’ son Charlie lets a wounded man Henry in their house who later hides in the house. Different Purgers comes on the door and warn James to hand over Henry to them or they will attack the entire house and kill everyone. James, with the responsibility of his family, is stuck on what to do.

As the family finally decides to hand over Henry, they change their minds and are attacked by The Purgers, which results in total chaos.

The Purge and its franchise have received mixed responses as they are said to be clichéd but yet praised for the action, drama and cinematography. While many have not been on the side of The Purge, if you’re a fan of The Purge, you’ll be enthralled to this.

3. Gone Girl :

Next up is not-so-horror but rather a psychological thriller of David Fincher which premiered on 52nd New York Film Festival. The power-packed cast has Ben Affleck who plays Nick Dunne, Rosamund Pike playing Nick’s wife, Amy Elliot Dunne and Neil Patrick Harris as Desi Collings, a rich ex-boyfriend of Amy.

Amy is missing on their fifth wedding anniversary, to which Nick becomes the prime suspect as there are bloodstains all over the house with the murder allegations.It is revealed that Amy purchased a gun, probably for her own security as she might feel unsafe with Nick, who had been cheating on her with his student, Andie. Desi, later on, comes into the play and reunites with Amy, making everything more complicated.

If the reviews are to be believed, Rotten Tomatoes has 87% approval rating with the profit of film being $129.99 million, making it stand among the most profitable movies of 2014.

4. Shutter Island (2010)

Regarded as one of the best movies of all time, directed by the well-renowned Martin Scorsese, Shutter Island takes you to the dimensions you never knew existed. Having Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo in the lead already tells the power-packed impact of this movie.
Both of them are the officers who take a visit to a hospital for criminally insane on Shutter Island. Their aim is to investigate the disappearance of a patient Rachel Solando, who has previously drowned her 3 children. Amidst the investigation, there are various clues and cryptic notes, which add more to the already-hassling investigation.

Marshall Edward Daniels (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) is a U.S. Marshall who faces troubling visions which can compromise their aims and objectives. There is also a mysterious doctor along with numerous shticks which play with your psychology.

Falling into the category of a Slasher film, Hush is directed and written by Mike Flannagan. It stars Kate Siegel, who also co-wrote the movie.

Maddie Young (Kate Siegel) is a deaf woman living an isolated life in the woods. She lost her ability to hear and speak at 13. She lives with her cat and has a friend, Sarah, who visits her occasionally. In the first few minutes of the movie, Sarah is stabbed to death by a masked killer man but her screams cannot be heard by Maddie.

Throughout the movie, the man chases and attempts to break into the house to kill Maddie as Maddie is shown giving significant efforts trying to save herself and her cat.

Though the story isn’t much, the movie has an impressive approval rating of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes and offers ingenious suspense throughout.

6. Scream (1996) :

Don’t Breathe released in 2016, and grossed more than $157 million worldwide, while having a budget of almost $10 million. The movie revolves around a tense atmosphere and gritty screenplay where three friends break into a Gulf War veteran blind man’s house, to steal his money.

Being a fan of the horror genre, it is troubling to talk about Donnie Darko in brief as it is impossible to be professional while describing this movie.

Released in 2001, it is a science-fiction psychological thriller directed by Richard Kelly. One thing is for sure, you wouldn’t understand this movie if you only watch it once. To understand and go to the depths of this movie, you need to be entirely involved and commit yourself.

The story follows a troubled teen Donnie Darko (Jake Gyllenhaal) who believes that the world is going to end within a month, due to a mysterious figure telling him about it. He prepares for his doomsday as the audience is troubled to figure out the reality and the dreams in the movie. It needs your full focus and you’ll be mesmerized completely.

Us shares a lot of similarities with Get Out. First, it is directed by Jordan Peele. The next is obviously its horror genre and the main cast being a person of color.
The movie starts with a flashback in 1986, following a family on a vacation at Santa Cruz. Young Adelaide Wilson, played by Lupita Nyong’o, encounters doppelganger of herself there which stays with her as a nightmare for years.
The movie then moves to Adelaide’s present where she has children of her own.

Her family consists of her husband Gabe (Winston Duke) and her two children Zora & Jason (Shahadi Wright Joseph & Evan Alex). Gabe proposes a family vacation and Adelaide, still haunted by her past, reluctantly agrees despite multiple denials.

However; her worst fears come true as the whole family encounters their doppelgangers.
The movie takes you by shock and sticks to the memory like Get Out. Us received great fanfare, critical acclaim and broke several box office records in horror. Made on a budget of $20 million, Us managed to collect over $255 million on the box office.
